There’s an interesting connection between the artist, actress Natalia Kovanko, and ballerinas Tamara Karsavina, Anna Pavlova, Nathalie Krassovska, and Olga Spessivtseva, all of whom emigrated from Russia after the Revolution for better lives in England and/or America (although Krassovska was a generation younger than the others) . Also, that’s an interesting expression on the artist’s wife’s face. I’m not saying these two observations are related! I’m just sayin’ period. 😉
Also, this painter had some connections, and I’m not just talking about Russian and English royalty. Margaret Dorothy Kahn was the daughter of ultra-rich banker Otto Kahn, the builder of Oheka Castle on Long Island where I live (the island, not the castle). Alexandra Mellon Grange Hawkin was the great-granddaughter of Thomas Mellon, the founder of Mellon Bank. We all know about Barbara Hutton, of course, but some quick research on her just now has prompted me to put her biography on my to-read list: “Poor Little Rich Girl: The Life and Legend of Barbara Hutton,” by C. David Heymann (L. Stuart, 1984, 390pp.)
