Yes, unless I missed my mark, I believe this is Suzay’s subtle reply to my post on Lilla Cabot Perry. I get the message, Suzay! I’m sorry! Please cover these figures with black bars or something! 🙂
Just consider that his paintings were created a few decades before the gay rights movement. He was an openly gay artist who worked in an era in which the expression of homosexuality meant to confine himself to a shady and borderline underworld. I think that his strongly idealized muscular semi-nude males were very provocative images in the 1940-50s.
I work at a gay oriented retail store in palm springs. I got a call a couple weeks ago from a woman who had acquired her stepson storage unit after his death. She said there was a bunch of gay stuff in it and she just wanted to get rid of for like $30 bucks. I gave her $60 there was a box of artwork and at least four of the pictures were by Quaintance I’m just curious if they are valuable at all?. One is shown here named “Saturday Night. A couple of the boathouse ones aswell. Does anyone know?
And no, this is a spite! What a horrible images!
Mercy, mercy, mercy …

It is in a very bad taste; borders on porno.

Replace those naked men with naked women and you’ll have pinups instead of porn.

True. I’m not against erotica or male or female nakedness in art, not even against pinups, some of which are funny, but I simply don’t like this guy.

Very ahead of the curve. I just wish they had been done on black velvet.
